Objective: The object of this study was to investigate the influence of biological selection and increasing morbidity on the results after cardiac surgery in older patients. Furthermore the hypothesis, that age is an independent predictor for perioperative mortality, as stated in the EuroScore, was tested.

Methods: 7827 patients were divided in 7 age groups, the 18 EuroScore parameter were then applied for each individual age group once including and once excluding the parameter age. Statistical analysis was then applied for all patients that died within 30 days after the operation.

Results: Results are shown in table 1 including all patients who died within 30 days after the operation.

Conclusion: Multimorbidity increases with age, the fact that the exclusion of the EuroScore parameter age in all age groups did not change the predictive value of the score proves that age is an independent predictor of perioperative mortality in cardiac surgery. It has to be clarified which independent factors are subsummized under the parameter age in the EuroScore.
